Atletico Madrid 1-3 Lille: Jonathan David double helps visitors sink Atletico

Substitute Jonathan David scored twice to give Lille a 3-1 win at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

The visitors were awarded a controversial penalty in the 71st minute when Koke appeared to make light contact with Benjamin Andre’s foot in the penalty area.

Despite protests from the Atletico players and a review from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the referee stood by his decision and David calmly converted from the spot to give Lille a 2-1 lead.

The Canadian forward put the French side out of reach when his shot deflected off the wrong foot to Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak in the 89th minute.

Former Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez had opened the scoring in the eighth minute when he met a mistake from Ousmane Toure, who hesitated with the ball before selling a backpass short.

But Edon Zhegrova leveled the French side on the hour mark with a brilliant left-footed curl that looped over Oblak’s head.

The result leaves Lille with six points after their impressive 1-0 win over Atletico’s rivals Real Madrid earlier this month.

Diego Simeone’s side, meanwhile, have won just one of their three Champions League matches this season and they will face another tough test when they travel to Ligue 1 leaders Paris St-Germain on November 6.
