Pakistan were beaten by just two wickets in a highly competitive match in Melbourne on Monday, and defeated Australia by nine wickets in a remarkably one-sided match in Adelaide on Friday.

As Haris Rauf proved brilliant with the ball and Pakistan’s top order crushed Australia’s much-vaunted attack with 10 sixes, the visitors secured their first ODI win since 2017 with more than 23 overs remaining.

With Australia set to rest top-pace trio Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc for the decider in Perth on Sunday, Pakistan are in a good position to pull off a surprise win.

“It wasn’t one of our best days,” Cummins said during the post-match presentation.

“Today was unfortunately one of our worst.”

West Australian Josh Inglis will get the chance to captain his country for the first time on home soil, with former World Cup winner Mark Waugh noting he has an important job.

“These are very, very exciting and challenging times for Josh Inglis. He will have plenty on his plate in keeping and batting, (along with) the captaincy,” Waugh said.

“It’s the best view in the house moving the field when you have the gloves on.”

As it stands, an ODI winning streak that started in India last October during the World Cup is in tatters after an astonishing performance from Pakistan with both the bat and the ball.

Haris Rauf was again excellent while Pakistani openers Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique routed the Australian attack as they showed what was possible on the field with the bat.

And as the Australians walked out of Adelaide Oval on Friday evening while it was still getting dark, they had reason to look shocked when a beautiful afternoon in the sun went wrong.

With Steve Smith hinting at finding top form and Josh Inglis’ scorecard forming a complete 360 circle, a score of over 300 looked plausible as Australia reached 2-79.

Rauf, the demolition worker, comes in in the 13th over.

The Pakistani paceman, whose exploits with the Melbourne Stars have made him a BBL favourite, is no stranger to playing in Australia and started putting the winning streak to the sword with some superb bowling.

Commenting, former World Cup winner Mark Waugh wondered whether the Australians were losing concentration by thinking too far ahead about what kind of score they needed to achieve, noting that they have now batted poorly in two successive matches.

“Maybe Australia thought it was a 280 field and relaxed a bit. Suddenly you’re in a hole,” Waugh said.

That’s an understatement as Australia soon found themselves in a deep hole with little prospect of finding a way out when man of the match Rauf looked to spoil the streak.

After giving Pakistan a chance to clinch the first match of the series at the MCG on the eve of the Melbourne Cup with an equally excellent performance, Rauf removed the Australian batsmen from Nos 4 to 8 in a match-winning performance.

The 31-year-old’s rhythm and variety proved too good for Australia’s middle order, who faltered badly after Inglis fell for 18 when he took Rauf to Pakistan wicketkeeper and captain Mohammad Rizwan. And Rauf and Rizwan were the difference.

It led to a steady trickle of wickets as Australia’s hopes of extending a winning streak dating back to World Cup triumph were extinguished.

For the second game in a row, Rauf snared the edge of Marnus Labuschagne (6 out of 11).

Smith had an early chance before settling, but after surviving an LBW review in which he would have lost his wicket had he been dealt initially, he was out the next ball when he dismissed Mohammad Hasnain to Rizwan in the 20th over.

Aaron Hardie, who made 14 from 29 balls, became the third Australian to fall five overs later in the combination of Rauf and Rizwan before Glenn Maxwell dragged the paceman onto his stumps when he tried to pull two overs later and fell for 16.

Australian skipper Pat Cummins proved hero with the bat at the MCG four nights earlier as he led his side to a two-wicket win and was tasked with staging another late rally.

He hit a brilliant six early in his innings but there would be no repeat of his exploits at the MCG, with Rauf grabbing a fifth for the day as he secured a lead over Rizwan.

With Cummins bowled out for 13, only Adam Zampa offered any resistance among the bowlers with 18 as the Australians were bowled out for 163 with 15 overs remaining.

Australia’s vaunted attack was rendered toothless by Ayub and Shafique, who initially fought hard against Starc and Hazlewood and attacked Zampa with gusto later in the stretch.

The target gave the Australians no room to move. But it’s a rare performance where none of the trio threaten, let alone take a wicket, as proved the case at Adelaide Oval.

All three received six points during their performances. Zampa, who secured Ayub’s only wicket for an enterprising 82 off 71 balls, also got four sixes.

Shafique finished unbeaten on 64 runs from 69 balls, while Babar Azam was not out on 15, having secured victory with a six.

Ayub, who equaled the best performance by a Pakistani batsman in Australia with half a dozen sixes, said his focus was on the ball and not on the champions tasked with claiming his scalp.

“The most important thing was that the team won. We intended to be positive about this performance and not think about the result,” he said.

“When they were bowling, (I saw) the ball coming out of the hand and nothing else. It’s about looking at the ball, being positive and trusting myself. I will try to continue to do that.”

Waugh was full of praise for Ayub, who was on seven off 27 deliveries before accelerating, when commenting on Fox Cricket.

“He put on a clinic with some clean shots. This is a demolition job,” Waugh said.

“It’s amazing what a little self-confidence can do. They’re just in the zone…and backing their instincts.

‘He’s a talent, Ayub. A real talent. You forget he’s only 22. He still has his whole career ahead of him.”
