NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar on Tuesday said the Badlapur incident, in which two preschool girls were sexually abused at a school, has tarnished Maharashtra’s image in the country.

He accused the state government of forgetting that the responsibility for women’s safety lies with it.

Pawar, who took part in a silent protest in Pune, said the government is insensitive if it thinks the opposition is playing political games over the Badlapur incident.

The Badlapur incident has given a major blow to Maharashtra’s image in the country, said the leader of the NCP (SP), which is part of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) party that also includes the Congress and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT).

Pawar said such an incident had taken place in the land of Chhatrapati Shivaji, who chopped off the hands of perpetrators involved in crimes against women.

The alleged sexual assault of two four-year-old girls by a male chaperone at a school in Badlapur in Thane district on Tuesday led to a massive protest in the city, with thousands of people blocking roads and railway tracks and clashing with police.

The MVA had called for a Maharashtra Bandh on August 24 to protest the crime against the young girls. However, the Bombay High Court on Friday restrained any political party or individual from going ahead with the bandh on August 24 or any future date in view of the incident.
