Bakari Sellers Drove Biden and Put Kamala Harris on SCOTUS

CNN anchor Johannes Berman was baffled by an analyst’s suggestion Bakari sellers – that chairman Joe Biden must rush through the nomination and confirmation of the vice president Kamala Harris to the Supreme Court.

Politico Playbook led Friday morning with a piece on the talk among Democrats to cheer for the Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor to retire and push through a replacement to avoid the risk of Trump getting a replacement choice for a liberal justice.

In the Friday edition of CNN News CentralBerman and Republican CNN analyst Shermichael Singleton were stunned – and Singleton was amused – by Sellers’ provocative idea to elevate Harris before Trump and Republicans can stop it:

JOHN BERMAN: And lay it all out on the ground. There is no room for error or delay. What do you think of that Bakari?

BAKARI SELLERS: No, I think that’s actually a very good plan. I think it’s something that needs to be done.

You know, Judge Sotomayor has been a more than competent judge. I know she may have some personal issues she’s dealing with while she’s on the couch. But you know what, I don’t want Justice Sotomayor to become another Ruth Bader Ginsburg when it comes to overstaying.

What does this mean for the dynamics of the court? The court is now six three. If we can replace it with a Biden judge, it will still be six three. The likelihood that Judge Sotomayor will have to resign or retire in the next four years is extremely high.

Combine that with Alito and Clarence Thomas. Then that means you go from a 6-3 court to a 7-2 court in terms of conservative versus liberal. And so I hope that Joe Biden makes the next ten weeks as consistent as possible.

I don’t care if I draw outside the lines, or what the Republicans think about it. This is within your authority. You really can do it and you should do it.

And you know, one more thing, John, is you have a great vice president who has a legal background to be on a Supreme Court. And let the Republicans go crazy, monkey, I even mention that option.

JOHN BERMAN: You’re hovering – you’re hovering this -, you know, 7:39 on the East Coast? Did Bakari Sellers Just Suggest Vice President Kamala Harris as a Potential Supreme Court Nominee?

BAKARI SELLERS: I don’t just let it float, but I want to stir everything up. I want people’s heads to explode this morning. So we head into the weekend knowing that the chaos is not over yet.

JOHN BERMAN: So, Sher.ichael. Did it work, what brokers did that?

SHERMICHAEL SINGLETON: I mean, look, it’s an idea that I haven’t heard anyone mention yet. But good luck getting around Mitch McConnell, who may be one of the most surgical individuals to ever lead or hold a minority position in the United States Senate.

I think if the Democrats were to try to nominate the vice president or anyone else, I think Mitch would do everything he can within the confines of the Senate rules to prohibit that, to give the incoming president the opportunity to make every single nomination and ultimately confirm those nominations that he can.

JOHN BERMAN: It can be done quickly. Look, we saw it happen with Amy Coney Barrett. We know it would take a lot of maneuvering at this point with Chuck Schumer and John Manchin on board and Sinema.

SHERMICHAEL SINGLETON: And I respect Chuck Schumer, but Chuck Schumer is no Mitch McConnell. I just don’t see it happening. Could Mitch do something like that? Abso-freakin-lutey! Chuck? Yeah, I wouldn’t do that, I wouldn’t hold my breath for it.

JOHN BERMAN: Right. Guys, you’re getting it moving! Have a bite on Friday morning!
