Bath & Body Works apologizes after candle design draws KKK shade comparisons

Bath & Body Works apologized after being criticized for its new candle design, which resembled the white shades of the Ku Klux Klan.

The popular beauty care company, known for its fresh scents, has issued a formal statement The independent amid backlash from internet users and consumers who liked the artwork from their ‘Snowed In’ candle offensive.

“We are committed to listening to our teams and customers and fixing any mistakes we make, even if they are unintentional like this one,” said a representative on behalf of the company. “We apologize to anyone we offended and are working quickly to have this item removed and review our process (going forward).

The Christmas scented candle’s outer label features a snowflake printed with crystals that resemble the shades worn by the KKK, the white supremacist group that terrorized the South in the second half of the 19th century.e century. Their signature white shades have a point with cutouts for the eyes – two features used in the crystal design.

“Bath & Body Works needs to fire all the people who approved this candle artwork,” someone wrote on X next to an image of the candles.

“Why didn’t they see that coming? Still glad they removed it. Sometimes companies really need to double check their designs before dropping them,” says another.

“Bath & Body Works removing that candle was a necessary step. How did that design even end up on the shelves?” asked a third. “This is not just a branding error; it reminds us how sensitive cultural symbols can be. Let’s hope they take this as a lesson in awareness and responsibility.”

A fourth commented: “I can’t let go of the KKK in this bath and bodywork candle design.”

“How would you not know that the image and design do not reflect the most hateful ‘Klu Klux Klan’?’ Accountability,” demanded one frustrated viewer.

The independent has contacted Bath & Body Works for comment.

Bath & Body Works faced criticism two years earlier when it released a limited-edition collection of grooming products in honor of Black History Month. However, the products were not new, they were just repackaged in prints that resembled Kente cloths.
