Biden is working with Harris on the campaign trail for the first time since his rejection of Trump’s re-election campaign

Six weeks after ending his re-election campaign amid growing calls from his own party for him to withdraw, President Biden is returning to the campaign trail for the first time on Monday.

It will be the first in a “solid” series of campaign appearances by the president on behalf of Vice President Kamala Harris over the next two months, a White House official told Fox News.

“President Biden will do everything he can in the coming months to get the job done,” said Ben LaBolt, White House communications director.

Biden will team up with Harris, whom he endorsed and who replaced him at the top of the Democratic constituency in 2024, at a Labor Day event in Pittsburgh, a union stronghold and the largest city in the western half of the key state of Pennsylvania.

According to Harris’ campaign, the vice president is expected to say that U.S. Steel (the Pittsburgh-based company that is the nation’s second-largest steel producer) should remain domestically owned and that she should “stress her commitment to always supporting American steelworkers.”

The arrest comes as Harris campaigns on Labor Day in some of the seven key swing states that will likely determine the winner of the vice presidential election with former President Donald Trump as the Republican nominee.

LaBolt said that going forward, Biden “will campaign to get Vice President Harris and Governor Walz elected and spend time with key constituencies with whom he has long-standing relationships. He will also continue to invest in manufacturing, infrastructure and emerging industries like clean energy, and strengthen our alliances on the global stage.”

NEW FOX NEWS POLLS IN 4 KEY STATES

Biden’s disastrous performance against Trump in their late June debate fueled Americans’ existing concerns that the 81-year-old president would have the physical and mental fortitude to serve another four years in the White House. It also prompted a growing chorus of calls from top Democratic allies and elected officials for Biden to drop out of the race, which he did on July 21.

Biden was showered with chants of “thank you, Joe” when he joined Harris in Largo, Maryland, on August 15 for their first joint appearance since dropping out of the 2024 race. Though it was billed as an official White House event to announce that the federal government had negotiated lower prescription drug prices with pharmaceutical companies, likely saving Americans billions of dollars, the gathering had the feel of a political rally.

Four days later, Biden was lauded and cheered on a much larger scale when he delivered the headline speech on the first night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. It was a remarkable moment for a president who had been forced out of the race by his own party weeks earlier.

Harris unexpectedly appeared onstage next to her boss at the United Center in Chicago after his speech.

Since Harris replaced Biden as the party’s standard-bearer, her poll numbers have risen and her fundraising has increased, thanks to the wave of momentum and energy she continues to ride.

Biden remains popular with many in his party’s base, and the president has a long history of campaigning on behalf of fellow Democrats. He was the Democratic Party’s most sought-after deputy during the 2018 midterm elections, when the party regained control of the House.

A source close to Biden’s political circle told Fox News that the president still has “a lot of political traction and influence with some key voters that we need to win in November.”

The strategist, who requested anonymity to speak more freely, told Fox News that “the stakes of the election are what drove him to run for re-election. It’s what he thinks about every day… Just because his name isn’t on the ticket doesn’t mean he doesn’t care just as much about winning this election. That’s why you’re going to see him fight, because he still believes in everything he said when he ran.”

“If he goes to Pittsburgh, talks about the economy and reaching out to voters he knows well, I think you’ll see him do that a lot,” the source added.

The president said this weekend that his visit to Pittsburgh, a city he has visited frequently over the years, would be the first of many campaign appearances between now and the November election.

“From that moment on, I’m on my way,” the president told reporters on Saturday.

There are some risks to bringing Biden back to the campaign trail, however. While his approval ratings have risen slightly since he dropped his reelection bid, they remain well underwater.

Moreover, while Harris repeatedly positions himself as a leader who will chart a “new path forward,” Biden is a reminder of the present and the past for voters.

Sources inside the Harris campaign confirm that the president and vice president will campaign together occasionally in the future, and that Biden will focus on Pennsylvania, but also Michigan and Wisconsin, the two other Rust Belt states that make up the Democrats’ so-called “Blue Wall.”

The party won all three states for 25 years until Trump narrowly won them in the 2016 election to capture the White House.

Four years later, in 2020, Biden won all three states by a razor-thin margin, returning to the Democratic camp after defeating Trump.

Biden is traveling to Wisconsin and Michigan later this week to highlight the administration’s cost-cutting efforts, formal events that are likely to take on political weight, given the president’s enduring appeal to white working-class voters and union members.

LaBolt said the president’s agenda going forward “will be robust and he plans to do everything he can to make as much progress as possible for hardworking Americans, whether through implementation or legislative action.”
