The president-elect makes a pit stop at the hotel where House Republican lawmakers are holding their leadership elections near the U.S. Capitol, just before his scheduled meeting with Biden.

Biden, who ended his re-election bid in July, a month after his disastrous debate performance against Trump, renewed questions about whether the 81-year-old president would physically and mentally remain in the White House for another four years, leading to calls for him to drop out of the race, the meeting with his predecessor and now successor could be difficult.

Trump has spent years verbally eviscerating Biden and his actions in the White House. And even after Biden ended his re-election bid, Trump continued to condemn the president and his successor atop the 2024 Democrats’ ticket, Vice President Harris.

And Biden has been labeling Trump as a threat to the country’s democracy for several years.

Four years ago, in the wake of his election defeat by Biden, Trump refused to concede and tried unsuccessfully to overturn the results.

Contrary to long tradition, Trump did not invite Biden to the White House. And two weeks after the January 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol by Trump supporters aimed at undermining the congressional certification of Biden’s Electoral College victory, Trump left Washington ahead of his successor’s presidential inauguration, becoming the first incumbent president for more than 20 years. a century to skip the inauguration of a successor.

“President Biden’s decision to welcome President-elect Trump to the White House is a tribute to normalcy in the presidential transition process. What was denied to Joe Biden after his election comes back to Biden’s name,” veteran political scientist Wayne Lesperance told Fox News. .

Lesperance, the president of the New Hampshire-based New England College, called Biden’s invitation “a remarkable gesture in that it legitimizes Trump’s return to power by the country’s leading Democrat and, hopefully, will be fulfilled with a promise for orderly transitions in the future. future.”

The meeting will be the first between Biden and Trump since they faced off in their only debate on June 27 in Atlanta. The two presidents, along with Harris and Trump’s running mate, now Vice President-elect Senator J.D. Vance, stood side by side in Lower Manhattan in New York City on September 11 during ceremonies marking the terrorist’s 23rd birthday. September. to attack.

This will be Trump’s second White House meeting with an outgoing president.

Eight years ago, after defeating Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton, Trump sat down in the White House with President Obama, who was wrapping up his second term.

“We are now going to do everything we can to help you succeed. Because if you succeed, the country succeeds,” Obama told Trump at the time.

Although it is a tradition, the meeting between the incoming and outgoing president is not mandatory.

A big question mark heading into the meeting: Will the vice president join Biden and Trump for part of the meeting?

Harris called Trump last week and congratulated him on his victory over her.

As for House Republicans, who will select their new leaders behind closed doors on Wednesday, Trump is expected to throw his support behind Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., to retain the top spot even amid some rumblings of discontent and threats of protests against Louisiana Republicans by the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus and their allies.

One of several sources detailing the Freedom Caucus’ possible plans to protest Johnson’s bid for speaker told Fox News Digital that Trump’s endorsement will do little to deter them from trying to block the unanimous approval of Johnson’s leadership . However, those protest threats largely fell apart during the House GOP Conference on Tuesday, including among Johnson critics who say Trump’s endorsement will likely seal the deal.

Trump has praised Johnson several times and the two men are known to have a good working relationship. He speaks to Republicans in the House of Representatives after they nearly declared victory in the 2024 elections, despite several close races still undecided.
