“Real Time” host Bill Maher seemed open-minded about President-elect Trump’s nominee for Health and Human Services.

Maher began his interview with physician and author Dr. Casey Means on how people have gone ‘crazy’ over Trump’s signing of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has tapped to lead federal health policy.

“Well, the system as it is, the way we do health care, is already very frustrating,” Maher said Friday evening. “So maybe he’s making it worse. But my head isn’t exploding about it.’

Means told Maher that she believed Election Day showed that the American people want to address the “chronic disease epidemic” and that RFK Jr. was someone who was willing to take on that task.

The HBO star pointed to Kennedy’s recent comments insisting he would not ban vaccines.

“If you want them, you have them. It won’t be mandatory. I think a lot of people would have objected to that before,” Maher said. “I mean, I’ve said it many times. There are some pathogens that, if they were circulating, I would fight you for the vaccine. And there are others that, you know, I just didn’t want, like the one we just had.”

Means sounded the alarm about how the US is “the sickest of the eleven highest-income countries in the world” and how the life expectancy of an American man is 73, which she said is ten years lower than that of Japan and Switzerland .

“This is something we should all be outraged about,” Means told Maher. “And only one party in our election cycle this year talked about chronic diseases. The words “chronic illness” never, to my knowledge, ever came out of the mouth of the Harris campaign. And I think that was a real misstep, because Americans I think I’m tired of being outraged by the fact that there isn’t a problem right now.”

“And Trump has asked RFK to do three simple things. He has been asked to get the corruption out of America’s health agencies, produce uncompromising, evidence-based research for our health guidelines, and reverse the trends of the chronic disease epidemic in two years. children and adults, so that we can emerge stronger than ever on America’s 250th anniversary. That sounds pretty good to me,” she added.

Maher, however, seemed more skeptical that Trump would keep his campaign promises.

“Believe me, the first time Trump gets a call from some big-time pharmaceutical industry loser saying, ‘Hey, you’re screwing with my profits, Trump could easily reverse all of this,’” Maher said.

Means remained optimistic, suggesting that the president-elect “has gained some light from RFK about the monumental nature of America’s health care epidemic, and it has struck a chord with him.”

“If you want to say he’s a crazy person, he certainly said some crazy things. He certainly said some crazy things, but we need a wake-up call,” Maher said later.

Kennedy endorsed Trump after suspending his own presidential campaign, becoming one of Trump’s most prominent surrogates and incorporating the “MAHA” (Make America Healthy Again) movement into his closing argument to voters.
