    One play can sum up the New York Jets of 2024. It’s Mike Williams who falls.

    The Jets, in their first game with interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich replacing the fired Robert Saleh, had a chance to beat the Buffalo Bills despite numerous mistakes, including a staggering number of penalties and a pair of huge missed field goals. Aaron Rodgers found Williams on the field for what looked like a huge gain that would have put the Jets in the red zone. But as Williams started to get back to the ball, he went down. This allowed Bills cornerback Taron Johnson to dive in front of Williams and get a game-clinching interception.

    That’s the Jets this season. There was an opportunity for something special, and they tripped over themselves to get to it. The Bills surged after that interception and won 23-20.

    The Jets knew what was at stake. If they won, they would be 3-3 and in first place in the AFC East. A loss and they would be two games behind the Bills, with a disappointing 2-4 record. Even in mid-October, it felt like a must-win game for the Jets, especially after the coaching change shook up the organization.

    There will be no more coaching changes. The Jets lost and now they have to dig a big hole. It doesn’t help that they can’t get out of the way.

    The Jets were far from perfect, but they moved the ball, especially on big plays from their stars. Breece Hall came out of his slump looking like the player we had seen over the first two seasons. Garrett Wilson caught a nice touchdown in the back of the end zone and had a productive first half. The Jets didn’t just fire Saleh. They changed the play-callers from Nathaniel Hackett to Todd Downing, and the difference was notable.

    The Jets’ biggest play in the first half was luck, although it gets to the point where Rodgers’ Hail Marys seem like a skill. On the last play of the first half, Rodgers finished and threw it into the end zone, and Allen Lazard came down with a 52-yard touchdown. That was his fourth career Hail Mary, and his first with the Jets. Maybe he knows what he’s doing on those plays.

    That kept the Jets in the game despite a huge half from Josh Allen. He had a quarterback sneak for a touchdown, two other passing touchdowns and made big plays all over the field. He scrambled to his right and fired a deep pass to running back Ray Davis for a stunning 42-yard gain.

    The Bills had the best player on the field. But the Jets also have a lot of talent, and they were desperate. They just couldn’t stop making crucial mistakes.

    The Jets have a new coach, but still made big mistakes.     New York had a chance in the final minutes, and the drive was kept alive by a controversial replay reversal that turned an apparent Rodgers fumble into an incomplete pass, and a defensive pass interference call. But a huge holding call brought a Hall back first. Then Rodgers’ deep pass to Williams was picked off after Williams lost his balance.

    Allen picked up a first down on a third-down run and the Bills then stopped the clock.

    You won’t often see a football team make so many mistakes in a close match. Saleh took the blame for the Jets’ disappointing start. But the results did not change.

    • This is the first time Aaron Rodgers has looked like himself in a Jets uniform. This third-and-11 dart to Allen Lazard for a first down was something.

    • Bills penalized during break between quarters

      The Bills just got punished for a penalty between quarters. Unsportsmanlike conduct by Dion Dawkins set up the Bills on third-and-21 at their own 11-yard line. They scored two plays later on fourth-and-15. The game was tied at 20-20 early in the fourth.
