Stand-up comedian Emil Wakim, who grew up in Bloomington and worked and performed at the Comedy Attic, will join the cast of “Saturday Night Live” for its 50th anniversary season, premiering Sept. 28 and featuring festivities, celebrity guests and more.

The announcement was made Monday night, along with two more rising performers announced: Ashely Padilla and Jane Wickline. Chloe Troast, who was a featured performer last season, is leaving SNL.

Before the announcement, Wakim had reached out to Jared Thompson, owner of Comedy Attic. Thompson said Wakim recently performed at the Bloomington Comedy Club in August, something he had been doing for years.

Thompson said Wakim first started working at the club years ago because one of the comedians offered him the opportunity to come work at the club so they could learn more about the business.

Wakim is a stand-up comedian and writer currently based in Brooklyn, New York. His national television show debut was on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon. He was selected as the New Face of Comedy at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal.

In a Facebook post, Thompson said Wakim started doing comedy in Bloomington in 2017, around the same time he started working at the Comedy Attic. He worked at the comedy club until 2020, when he moved to New York.

“In all this time, I have never seen anyone work so hard, be so resilient, or be so willing to not only be smart but do things the right way to get where they wanted to be,” Thompson wrote in his Facebook post.

He continued, “Besides being the funniest person in town and opening the door at almost every show, he also did all the art for the club, designed our website, created the art, managed the tent for the club, and drove the vast majority of the comedians to and from the airport.”
