Boston Bruins hit rock bottom with embarrassing loss to Blue Jackets

Just when you think the Boston Bruins have hit rock bottom in 2024-2025, they surprise you. After losing 7-2 in Dallas last Thursday night, they returned home and lost in overtime to the St. Louis Blues 3-2 on Saturday against a team missing four of their top six defensemen.

On Monday night, the Black and Gold hit a brand new all-time low this season with a 5-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on TD Garden ice. The loss drops them to 8-9-3 through 20 games and things are getting worse by the day. There is no easy solution to their problems, but something has to be done quickly or the Christmas season will be over.

Bruins hit rock bottom after losing to Blue Jackets

The Bruins fell behind 3-0 against Columbus after twenty minutes. It was bad hockey to say the least. They allowed the first goal when Brandon Carlo slid into Jeremy Swayman after making a save on a breakaway and the big Boston defenseman knocked the puck into the net. That was just the beginning.

On the power play later in the period the Bruins got lazy, really lazy with the puck and it led to a goal from Mathieu Olivier as he cut in front of the net to beat Swayman for a 2-0 lead. To make matters worse, former Bruin James van Riemsdyk scores his third goal of the season with 32 seconds left in the period. In the third period, they allowed a second shorthanded goal to the Blue Jackets for good measure. Yes.

Elvis Mzerlinkis turned back 29 of the Bruins’ 30 shots and the only goal he scored was a second period power play goal by Charlie Coyle. That was the one bright spot for the Black and Gold in what was the Seaosn’s most embarrassing performance to date, and that’s saying a lot.

Where exactly the organization goes, that’s right, the organization, remains to be seen. Did Jim Montgomery coach his last game as Bruins coach? Maybe, but there is a debt that goes from the players to the front office. This season is quickly turning into a losing season and there is no end in sight to the battle.

You can argue that the Bruins have quit the game and it’s something that has been brought up several times by many people. Lack of details, lack of defense in the defensive zone and simply not having enough players to run the offense are contributing to what could very quickly become a lost season for the Boston Bruins.
