Although Chappell Roan has been very serious in her pleas for fans to respect her personal space, Saturday evening live found a way to clarify the situation during this weekend’s season 50 premiere by comparing the red-hot pop star to Moo Deng, the two-month-old pygmy hippopotamus who lives in a zoo in Thailand.

“The response has been overwhelming, but it’s gotten to the point where I have to set some boundaries,” Yang said, paraphrasing Roan’s words. “Reminder: Women don’t owe you anything. If I’m in my enclosure, tripping over things, biting my trainer’s knee, I’m working. That’s the project. Don’t shout my name and expect a photo just because I’m your parasocial best friend or because you appreciate my talent.

In August, the “Good Luck, Honey!” singer made headlines for speaking out against toxic fan behavior, detailing experiences of stalking and boundary crossing she’s faced in recent months. “I’ve had too many non-consensual physical and social interactions and I need to explain and remind you that women don’t owe you anything,” she wrote in an Instagram post at the time. “I chose this career path because I love music and art and honor my inner child, and I will not accept any form of harassment for choosing this path, nor do I deserve it.”

Yang, as Moo Deng further joked: “Before me, the only hippos in the media were either Hungry, Hungry or Jada Pinkett in the media. Madagascar. But now I’m your favorite hippo’s favorite hippo.”

When Jost suggested that Yang’s Moo Deng looked a lot like Chappell Roan, the Weekend update host asked if she even knew who Roan was. ‘I’m ten weeks old, Colin. Of course I know Chappell Roan,” Yang said. ‘And by the way, leave her alone! Let her take as much time as she needs for her mental health.”

On Friday, Roan pulled out of her scheduled appearances at the All Things Go festival in both New York and Maryland, writing in a post to her Instagram Story, “I apologize to those who have been waiting to see me in NYC and DC this weekend. at All Things Go, but I can’t perform. Over the past few weeks, things have become overwhelming and I can really feel it. I feel pressure to prioritize a lot of things right now and I need a few days to prioritize my health. I want to be there when I perform and give the best shows possible.”

On SNLMoo Deng also echoed Roan’s comments on why she would not support a presidential candidate. “I know I’m only ten weeks old, but this is very important to me, so please listen: I will not be making an endorsement in this year’s election.” Roan recently said she wouldn’t support anyone in the US presidential election, but later made it clear she would vote for Kamala Harris after fans’ reactions.

The Weekend update The segment wasn’t Yang’s only reference to Roan in Saturday’s episode: In a sketch later in the evening, Yang referenced the classic show I love Lucy as a ‘femininomenon’, taken from the name of a song by Chappell Roan.
