Braintree API keeps PayPal offline for hours • The Register

If you were planning on sending someone money via PayPal, or using it for business, we have bad news: it’s not possible around the world.

PayPal confirmed the matter in a post on its status website, indicating that the problem stems from an issue with the GraphQL API on which some of the company’s services operate. According to the outage notice, withdrawals, express checkout, crypto activity, some Venmo services, and Xoom are all affected.

The incident began around 11:00 UTC, around 6:00 AM on the east coast of the United States, as evidenced by a spike in Down Detector notifications of users unable to log in. When accessing their accounts, users reported that they were unable to send or receive money, that the bank account and card details were missing, and the like.

PayPal users also took to social media to report the outage, with numerous posts on Twitter about being unable to use the service.

This vulture has been able to access his account, but can’t do much on the app or website without getting an error message or being booted back to the login screen.

PayPal noted that merchants are likely seeing an increase in HTTP 500 errors for REST API calls, but few details were provided about the cause of the outage.

As of this writing, PayPal updated the incident page to reflect that the issue has been resolved and service appears to be back to normal — at least to your reporter.

While the issue has been resolved, it is still not immediately clear what caused the outage with the Braintree GraphQL API, whether it is a cyber attack or perhaps a matter of not having enough people around to view the stack.

We reached out to PayPal for more information about the outage, but have not heard back at time of publication. This story will be updated as we learn more. ®
