Broad fire: Fast-moving brush fire in Malibu burns at least two homes; PCH near Malibu Canyon Road closed in both directions

MALIBU, Calif. (KABC) — At least two homes were damaged Wednesday when a fast-burning brush burned along Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

The so-called Broad Fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. near PCH and Malibu Canyon Road, close to Pepperdine University, and scorched about 50 acres. So far there have been no immediate reports of injuries.

As of early Wednesday afternoon, the fire’s progress was “halted,” the Los Angeles County Fire Department said in a statement.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the fire was 60% contained.

Malibu city officials urged residents in the area to shelter in place but warned them to be prepared for possible evacuations.

All lanes of PCH were closed from Corral Canyon to Webb Way, and traffic signal backup generators were deployed in the area, Malibu city officials reported on X.

Video footage from the scene showed flames in one home, and fire officials later said a second building was also affected by the blaze.

The fire broke out amid a red flag warning of critical fire danger due to fierce Santa Ana winds and low humidity.

Nearby Pepperdine University reported no impact on its operations, although it notified students of the road closure in the area.
