Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix and head coach Sean Payton had a heated conversation on the sideline during a game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

It wasn’t clear what was said, but the rookie starter made his point emphatically to the Super Bowl champion’s head coach in the third quarter. Fortunately for the Broncos, the exchange did not change the course of the game.

Denver defeated Las Vegas for the first time since 2019, 34-18. Nix went 19-for-27 with 206 passing yards and two touchdown passes. Josh Reynolds and Jaleel McLaughlin each had Nix’s touchdown catches.

Payton was asked after the game about the conversation with Nix.

“It’s part of the deal. There’s still a little bit of Ferris Bueller in this player that we have to get rid of. I’m talking about Bo,” Payton said. “I love him to death and sometimes it’s my love language.”

Nix also spoke about the interaction.

“Yes, I saw the movie,” Nix said. “I think it’s funny. That, I think, literally explains the situation. We’re just out there with a great competitive intensity and fire. We can have those conversations and go right back on and score a few more touchdowns. It doesn’t matter to us .”

The Broncos outscored the Raiders 21-8 in the second half. Las Vegas benched Gardner Minshew for Aidan O’Connell midway through the game. Between the two quarterbacks, they had three interceptions.

Denver cornerback Patrick Surtain II returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown.

“You don’t have to step on the gas, he played well. He played really well,” Payton said. “The importance of the game is that it’s 10 points because they’ll probably at least kick a field goal where it happened.

“That was a huge play for us. At that moment it is suddenly 10-7. This game is constantly going back and forth. If you score in defense, you win 80% of the time, and then you lose the ball three times.” Definitely, it was a huge game, a 10-point game to say the least.”
