Sean Payton got pretty much everything he could want on his return to Caesars Superdome.

He got a chance to see old friends and former players, including Drew Brees.

He was given the game ball, which was then presented to him in the locker room by Broncos owner Greg Penner.

And he pulled off a convincing 33-10 win over the team he coached for 16 seasons.

“This is the last team I haven’t beaten,” Payton said.

With his latest victory, Payton became one of only eight NFL coaches to defeat all 32 teams.

“It means you’ve coached in two different places,” Payton said.

After beating all 32 teams, Payton joins a brotherhood that also includes Bill Belichick, Tony Dungy, John Fox, Mike Holmgren, Bill Parcells, Mike Shanahan and Andy Reid.

This was of course Payton’s first opportunity to cover all 32 teams, as it was his first time facing the Saints as a head coach. He coached the Saints starting in 2006 before stepping down after the 2021 season.

“It meant a lot,” Payton said of facing his former team. “There were a lot of moments here. You get a chance to see old players who were here.”

One of those players was Drew Brees, who was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame earlier Thursday and was honored again at halftime. Payton, along with current Broncos * and former Saints assistants) Pete Carmichael, Joe Lombardi and Zach Strief, appeared at Brees’ Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Hilton Riverside in downtown New Orleans.

“It was good to see him,” Payton said. “We thanked him.”

Payton’s Broncos improved to 4-3, while Dennis Allen’s injury-plagued Saints lost their fifth straight game.

“We did a lot of things right tonight,” Payton said. “We obviously ran the ball well. We were under pressure defensively. They (the saints) have been ensnared. I told DA they needed to get healthy because they have a good football team. A lot of their players couldn’t play.”

Payton says he thinks the Saints will turn things around.

“You all saw how they played early in the season before the injury hit them,” Payton said. “Two good wins in a row (to start the season). There are so many matches waiting for us now. They will bounce back.”
