Bronny James would go G League after the Lakers trip

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Los Angeles Lakers rookie Bronny James was scheduled to travel on the team’s upcoming trip Monday through Nov. 6, then shuttle between the active roster and the franchise’s South Bay G League affiliate, though coach JJ Redick said those plans could change.

The Lakers defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves in Tuesday’s season opener and made history as LeBron James and Bronny James became the first father-son duo to play in an NBA game together. LA faced the Phoenix Suns on Friday night at Crypto.com Arena and will host the Sacramento Kings on Saturday before traveling to Phoenix, Cleveland, Toronto, Detroit and Memphis.

“Our plans are always fluid, based on real time,” Redick said before the game on Friday. “I think we have two guys dressing today, but we haven’t dressed since yesterday.

“The plan for Bronny to move between the Lakers and South Bay has always been the plan since day one. (General manager) Rob (Pelinka) and I have talked about that. LeBron has talked about that.”

LeBron spent 11 of his first 21 years in the league with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was about to begin his second season with the Cavs when Bronny was born on October 6, 2004 in Akron, Ohio, making for a momentous occasion when the Jameses return there next Wednesday.

The G League draft is Saturday and team training camps run through November 7.

As Bronny James and his representative, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, discussed the development with NBA teams during his pre-draft process, sources told ESPN that the concept of G League play was welcome. These sources said Paul argued for a standard contract – not a two-way deal – pre-draft, while making clear that he and Bronny, selected by LA in the second round with pick No. 55, were completely open to the development process.

When LeBron made his first comments about plans for Bronny’s rookie season at media day last month, he talked about how well the Lakers are aligned with their G League affiliate.

“I’m just looking forward to seeing him continue to grow as a basketball player, whether it’s with us or with the G League team and just keep getting better and better,” LeBron said. “His job is to work hard and keep getting better, just like the rest of us. And we want to hold him accountable, and he’s going to hold us accountable. And if we all do that, we’ll all get better, because we are all one team. We are a reflection of South Bay; South Bay is a reflection of us.”

It’s typical for players picked midway through the second round to spend time in the G League, where they receive coaching, reps and structure in their respective teams’ programs. During the 2023-2024 season, 23 of the 28 players selected in the second round of the 2023 NBA draft spent time in the G League.

Pelinka, who is also the Lakers’ vice president of basketball operations, and Redick have both talked about creating the right synergies between the Lakers and their South Bay team.

Redick, who was hired with no previous head coaching experience in part by selling his vision of building an elite player development program for LA, has stated that Bronny’s journey will provide the first opportunity to implement the approach.

“For us, prioritizing player development, we look at Bronny as case study one because his base level of feel, athleticism, defender on offense, shooting, passing, there’s a lot to like about his game,” Redick said. in July. “And as we build our player development program holistically, he will have a tremendous opportunity to become an outstanding NBA player.”

South Bay also has a new coach this season, with LA hiring Zach Guthrie to replace Dane Johnson last month.
