    BrucePac is recalling more than 20 million pounds of meat due to listeria

    Pre-cooked meat manufacturer BrucePac has issued a recall for nearly 10 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products due to possible listeria contamination, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Wednesday.

    According to the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) notice, approximately 9,986,245 pounds of product is subject to the recall after routine testing showed evidence of Listeria monocytogenes on BrucePac ready-to-eat poultry. The presence of L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis infection if adulterated food is consumed.

    The affected products were shipped to facilities and distributors across the country, including restaurants and other food establishments. The affected foods have a production date through October 8, meaning they are likely still in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers and available on shelves, in restaurants and at other establishments, FSIS warned.

    Which BrucePac products are being recalled?

    Ready-to-eat meat and poultry products produced between June 19, 2024 and October 8, 2024, with location number “51205 or P-51205” on the packaging, are included in the recall.

    BrucePac and the USDA have not yet released a full list of products. Although several types of meat are under recall, the USDA has determined that ready-to-eat chicken products are the source of Listeria monocytogenes.

    What should you do if you have a recalled product?

    The USDA advises consumers who have purchased these products not to eat them, but to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. Retailers stocking the products are also advised not to sell recalled products and to discard or return them.

    There have been no confirmed reports of adverse events associated with these products, but anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact their healthcare provider.

    Symptoms of listeriosis or listeria poisoning

    Listeriosis, or listeria poisoning, is a foodborne bacterial infection usually caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. It is considered a serious condition and can be dangerous or life-threatening, especially for older adults, people with weak immune systems, and pregnant people.

    According to the USDA, symptoms include:

    • Fever
    • Muscle pain
    • Headache
    • Stiff neck
    • Confusion
    • Loss of balance
    • Convulsions
    • Diarrhea
    • Other gastrointestinal symptoms
    • Miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth and/or life-threatening infection in newborn babies
    • Dead

    People in higher risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months of eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the healthcare provider about eating the contaminated food, the USDA said.
