The first week of the season for the Bruins has seen mixed results and they are hoping they can move in the right direction on their first road trip of the season.

Boston lost twice in six days to the Florida Panthers, and Monday’s loss at TD Garden showed a lack of commitment for head coach Jim Montgomery. He highlighted one player he would like to see take things further.

“Charlie Coyle, it doesn’t look like he’s up to speed right now, but he’s getting there,” Jim Montgomery told reporters on Tuesday, according to video provided by the team. “He is an experienced player who we have relied on in so many areas. I’m not worried about Charlie getting where he needs to be.”

Coyle is a minus-5 with zero points in four games. The middle six lines are generally not performing to their standard, and Coyle understood what needed to change.

“I think he’s right,” Coyle said. “There are some games, especially the ones we lost, that we are a little hesitant about. We are not alert and we are not the first in the fight. If you’re late for battles, it’s hard to win most of them. I don’t say that as an excuse, but we have to be alert. We have to be ready to go into the corners, in front of the net, wherever the battle is, near the baseline. Everywhere on the ice we have to kind of dig in and compete and say, ‘Hey, I’m going to win this thing.’ If you keep that in mind, you’ll be amazed at how often you come up with or win the puck. We need to do something more about that.”

The 32-year-old noted that he needed to come inside more and simplify his game to better help the team. Coyle and Boston will get a chance to bounce back when they take on the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday at Ball Arena.
