Bruins interim coach explains Jake DeBrusk’s challenging goal

The Bruins lost a hard-fought game against the Canucks, but there was a minor controversy surrounding a former Boston forward.

Jake DeBrusk scored a crucial goal on Wednesday night. The Black and Gold couldn’t get past Kevin Lankinen despite 32 shots on goal. Vancouver scored an empty-net goal in the final seconds to secure a 2-0 victory at TD Garden. However, there could have been more going on with DeBrusk’s goal.

Jeremy Swayman immediately called for the goal to be wiped away as Conor Garland put a high stick on the puck before it bounced and created a clean chance for DeBrusk. Interim head coach Joe Sacco challenged the call after a long delay, believing Garland pushed the puck to DeBrusk after a handpass. After review, the goal stood.

“I felt confident,” Sacco told reporters, according to Kevin Paul Dupont of The Boston Globe. “Otherwise I wouldn’t have taken up the challenge.”

Boston’s confidence did not waver despite Sacco’s first loss as interim head coach. The B’s took pride in their defensive play and hoped the chances created would lead to goals.
