Buccaneers Outlast Detroit Lions 20-16

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made quite a few mistakes and were plagued by injuries, but they did enough to win the game.

The Bucs won 20-16 in Motor City, with the defense holding off the Lions in the red zone multiple times to win the day. Quarterback Baker Mayfield accounted for two touchdowns, one passing and one rushing, in the win.

The Buccaneers and Lions traded field goals early in the first quarter, with the Buccaneers scoring two on their first two drives and Detroit scoring one on their second to make the score 6–3 with about seven minutes left in the first quarter. The Lions had another drive with four first downs entering the second quarter, but the Bucs were able to stop them on third down again — as such, the score was tied 6–6 at the start of the second quarter.

The Bucs struck back immediately on their first drive of the second quarter. It was a great drive by Chris Godwin, who caught two first-down passes and then a touchdown to extend the lead to 13-6. Detroit’s next drive was long and featured some serious heroics, including a fake punt and another fourth-down conversion after that, but they were stopped again.

The Bucs had a chance to score, but Lions DB Brian Branch intercepted Baker Mayfield with 1:51 left. Detroit got the ball back, but a huge miss as the clock expired with no timeouts left them with 12+ men on the field when they went to spike – as a result, Detroit saw no points before halftime after a 10-second runoff, so the Bucs were up 13-6 at the break.

The second half started with a field goal by the Lions to make it 13-9, and the Bucs were unable to extend their lead on the next drive as they went three-and-out. Detroit took advantage, mounting another long drive and scoring on a one-yard touchdown run by David Montgomery to make it 16-13. The Bucs responded quickly late in the third quarter when Baker Mayfield made a crazy scramble from the 10-yard line to score a touchdown and put Tampa Bay back up 20-16.

The Lions punted on their first drive of the fourth quarter, but the Bucs had to do the same on the next drive. The Lions were driving with eight minutes left, but Jared Goff threw a pick to Christian Izien — his second of the day — and the Bucs got the ball back. They couldn’t do anything with it, though, and punted back to Detroit.

The Lions again marched down the field and gave it away on downs, and as the Bucs looked to close out the game, they threw an incomplete pass on third down. The Lions had one more chance, but failed, and as a result, the Bucs won the game 20-16 and are now 2-0 on the year.

The Bucs now return to Tampa Bay to play the Denver Broncos in Week 3.
