Bucs star Chris Godwin suffers horrific ankle injury, broadcast will not be reflected in Ravens loss

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers suffered more than just a loss to the Baltimore Ravens on “Monday Night Football.”

After star receiver Mike Evans left the game early after re-aggravating a hamstring injury, his counterpart, Chris Godwin, was taken off the field with 43 seconds to play after suffering a gruesome ankle injury that the ESPN broadcast refused to replay.

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles revealed that Godwin suffered a dislocated ankle, and the usual timeline for recovery from such an injury should see him out for the remainder of the season.

It was off time for the Buccaneers, who were down 41-31 and facing a third-and-17, when quarterback Baker Mayfield found Godwin in the middle of the field, and the receiver spun him up for the first down.

But as he did this, Ravens linebacker Patrick Queen rolled onto Godwin’s leg, and you could see that the direction of his left leg was not in the direction it should have been.

Godwin was clearly in pain as coaches and teammates rushed to him to offer support. He was placed in an air cushion on the field and taken away.

Godwin hauled in seven of his nine targets for 65 yards on the night, giving him 576 receiving yards on the year — second-most in the NFL, behind only Cincinnati Bengals star Ja’Marr Chase.

Godwin was a real target for Mayfield, who in this game led the NFL in passing touchdowns with 15, five of which went to Godwin.

Godwin would have had another touchdown grab in the first half tonight if not for an offensive grab calling the ball back.

However, Evans found the end zone first for Tampa Bay on a 25-yard strike from Mayfield. However, he limped off on the sidelines going into this game trying to overcome a hamstring ailment.

It was completely exacerbated two drives later, as he was unable to haul in another touchdown pass from Mayfield and the tackle of Brandon Stephens, who was also injured on the play, led to Evans immediately clutching his right hamstring.

ESPN reported that Bucs coaches who walked him through the tunnel to the locker room could not even put his shoe on because of the pain.

Evans’ injury could be serious in the future, but the Bucs have a good chance of him returning at some point.

Godwin, on the other hand, may have just played his last game as a Buccaneer, as he will be a free agent after the 2024 campaign.
