BYU football stuns Oklahoma State with a last-second touchdown pass

College football fans may have missed some early morning magic in Provo, Utah on Saturday morning.

No. 13 BYU faced a first-and-10 from Oklahoma State’s 35-yard line with just 19 seconds left while trailing 38-35. The Cougars, undefeated to that point, were tasked with somehow beating the Cowboys defense in full pass coverage late in the game.

And that’s exactly what BYU did, as quarterback Jake Retzlaff threw a 35-yard game-winning touchdown pass to Darius Lassiter with 10 seconds left at nearly 2 a.m. ET Saturday morning. Lassiter caught a slanted pass and picked off several Oklahoma State defenders to lift BYU to 7-0 (4-0 Big 12).

Oklahoma State took a 35–31 lead with 1:13 left in the fourth quarter after seventh-year senior quarterback Alan Bowman found Brennan Presley for a six-yard touchdown.

BYU regained possession for the game-winning drive but was initially unable to move the chains, requiring a fourth-and-7 conversion at its own 28-yard line with 42 seconds left. The drive was set up by a big play from Retzlaff, who ran 27 yards before throwing the winning touchdown on the next play.

The Cougars are tied atop the Big 12 rankings with No. 12 Iowa State (6-0, 3-0), with both programs being true College Football Playoff contenders. Meanwhile, the Cowboys, who were expected to compete for the Big 12 Championship this season, have lost four straight games, all of which have come to terms.

Retzlaff finished the game 13 of 26 passing for 218 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, and also rushed for 81 yards and a score. BYU was led by running back LJ Martin, who recorded 20 carries for 120 yards and two touchdowns.

The Cougars nearly upset Oklahoma State last season in Stillwater, Oklahoma, but fell 40-34 in double overtime in the season finale. The 2024 meeting also had fireworks, but this time it certainly went in BYU’s favor.
