Caitlin Clark Makes WNBA Rookie History Again With Indiana Fever Win Over Connecticut Sun

Caitlin Clark made WNBA history again by setting a record for most three-pointers made by a rookie in a single season during the Indiana Fever’s 84-80 win over the Connecticut Sun.

Clark hit her 86th triple of the season in the first quarter, breaking the previous record of 85, set in 2022 by Rhyne Howard of the Atlanta Dream. She added two more from long range later in the game to bring her season total to 88.

The 22-year-old had 19 points, five rebounds and five assists as the Fever snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Sun — Indiana had lost all three games against the Sun this season and hadn’t beaten Connecticut since July 3, 2021, the WNBA said.

“We’re different as night and day,” Clark said of the team’s progression after the game. “And that’s what you’re going to see with a young group. We’re young, obviously. We’ve got some older players, but a lot of the people in our lineup are younger, so just getting to know each other and learning, I think, will go a long way.”

All five Indiana starters scored in double figures, with Kelsey Mitchell again leading the team with 23 points. She has been in red-hot scoring form, averaging 25.6 points per game since competition resumed after the Olympic break in Paris.

Mitchell spoke about the benefits of playing with someone like Clark during her on-field interview after the game.

“I think the best thing about it is that our chemistry keeps getting better,” she said.
“I appreciate what Caitlin brings to the table because not only does she have the speed and the space, but she can sing her heart out. You just have to be ready when your number is called with someone like that.”

The game was tight throughout, with neither team able to extend its lead. The Sun threatened to spoil the party in the final minutes, but two clutch free throws from Lexie Hull – who scored 17 points in her second start of the season – decided the game and secured a surprise victory for the Fever.

Indiana moved to 15-16 with the win and continues its push for the postseason, while Connecticut fell to 22-8. The Sun were led by DiJonai Carrington with 19 points and six steals, while Alyssa Thomas added 17 points, six rebounds and six assists.

According to the WNBA, the official attendance at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indiana was 17,274. The Fever set a WNBA attendance record with more than 500,000 fans at home and away games during the season.

Among the fans in the arena were a few sports greats. Team USA Olympic gold medalists Simone Biles and Gabby Thomas met with the players after the game.

“EVERYONE IS WATCHING WOMEN’S SPORTS,” Biles posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “So happy to be rooting! My first of many WNBA games.”

“First WNBA game of many!” Thomas said. “I had so much fun supporting these stars.”

After making WNBA history by grabbing 20-plus rebounds in three straight games, Angel Reese’s streak ended in a 74-70 loss to the Washington Mystics.

Reese still had 14 rebounds — her 24th straight game with double-digit rebounding — to go along with seven points and two assists. The seventh overall pick has set multiple rebounding and double-double records in an impressive rookie campaign.

Stefanie Dolson led the way with 17 points for the struggling Mystics team this season, helping the team to a 9-22 record.

The Sky, led by 15 points from Michaela Onyenwere, now lead 11-19.
