California gets warning for ‘inches of snow’ in summer

Even though summer is only a week old, parts of California are still expecting dozens of inches of snow this weekend and early next week.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Hanford, California, issued a winter weather advisory Friday. The advisory goes into effect late Sunday night and will remain in effect through Monday night for Yosemite National Park and the towns of Tuolumne Meadows, Wawona, Devils Postpile, Florence Lake, Lake Thomas Edison, Lake Wishon, Huntington Lake, Shaver Lake and Cedar Grove.

“We have a very early winter weather advisory. Yes, #snow is in the forecast above 8,000 feet. The advisory is in effect from 11 p.m. Sunday through 5 p.m. Monday,” NWS Hanford posted on X, formerly Twitter, on Friday. “There is a 45 to 75 percent chance of 3 inches or more of snow above 8,000 feet from #Fresno County to #Yosemite #CAWx.”

In addition to snowfall, wind gusts of up to 40 miles per hour are possible. Total snowfall could reach 4 inches, the advisory said.

NWS Chief Forecaster Andy Bollenbacher said Newsweek that several inches of snow at this time of year was rare and had not happened in at least 20 years, according to data. He added that meteorologists had previously issued the advice to give people extra time to prepare.

“Plan for slick road conditions,” the advisory reads. “Prepare for winter weather conditions. There is a 45 percent chance of 3 inches or more of snow at Tuolumne Meadows with temperatures below freezing. Tioga Pass could be impacted as there is a 55 percent chance of 3 inches or more of snow.”

“Drive slowly and exercise caution when traveling,” the advice reads.

While rare, it’s not the first snowfall in the region this season. In August, a dusting of snow fell in high elevations in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. But the snow didn’t stay put. Bollenbacher said the incoming snow is more likely to stay put and pile up, impacting travel and recreational activities.

The forecast comes as the NWS warns that temperatures will drop along the West Coast this weekend.

“Temperatures across much of the West will be near or slightly below normal through Saturday,” an NWS forecast said. “On Sunday, the Pacific frontal system will usher in cooler, unsettled weather and temperatures along the West Coast will fall well below normal.”

The NWS Climate Prediction Center’s temperature outlook through Sept. 22 shows that the western states with the highest risk for below-average temperatures over the next week are Southern California, Southern Nevada, Southwestern Utah and Western Arizona. Temperatures are expected to be above normal across much of the United States.
