Can Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloons Fly in the Rain on Thursday?

Rain or shine, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will go on.

According to the latest weather forecasts from Fox and NBC, it is expected to rain in New York City during the 98th Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade on Thursday, November 28. According to the department store chain, the annual event draws about 3.5 million people to the parade route to watch the spectacle live and 30 million people watch from home.

But given the bad weather, will there still be a parade?

Fortunately, the parade, which will feature a star-studded line-up of performers, will go ahead despite the rain, a spokesperson said. The New York Post. However, if the wind becomes too aggressive, many of the large balloons may not fly.

Based on city guidelines issued in 1998 after a spectator was injured during the parade when a balloon struck a lamppost, oversized balloons may not be used if sustained winds exceed 37 miles per hour or gusts exceed 34 miles per hour .

But that doesn’t mean viewers won’t be able to see the fun array of balloons during the parade, including Smokey Bear, Stuart the Minion, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Pillsbury Doughboy, Ronald McDonald and Minnie Mouse for the first time.

Fox reports that winds should be light Thursday at around 5-10 miles per hour, which is well below the 37 mile per hour limit.

PEOPLE contacted the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for additional information but did not immediately hear back.

According to NBC, the rain is expected to start early in the morning and continue throughout the day. Therefore, those planning to attend the parade in person should dress appropriately for wet and cold weather.

According to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center (WPC), PEOPLE previously reported that the U.S. may see a “White Thanksgiving” as winter weather moves across the country throughout the week.

According to the WPC, it will likely be a “wet” and “unsettled” Thanksgiving and holiday weekend for many, especially those on the East Coast.
