The Canadian women’s rugby sevens team continued their thrilling Olympic run in Paris by beating Australia on Tuesday to secure a gold medal.

Canada scored 21 points without reply and defeated Australia 21-12, showing excellent defense.

The women will now play New Zealand for gold.

Canada surprised France in a sevens rugby match by beating the home side with two desperate, late tries to win their quarter-final 19-14.

The Canadians, who were ranked fifth, failed to advance beyond the group stage at the postponed 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, but won bronze in Rio in 2016.

They finished second in Group A in Paris with a score of 2-1 and managed to avoid the top-ranked New Zealanders in the quarter-finals, having already lost to them in their group match.
