Caoimhin Kelleher: Liverpool goalkeeper catches the eye by denying Kylian Mbappe with a penalty save

Alisson, considered by many to be the best goalkeeper in the world, suffered a hamstring injury during Liverpool’s victory over Crystal Palace on October 5 and has not played since.

The 32-year-old has made 271 appearances since joining from Roma for £66.8million in 2018 – and has won the Champions League and Premier League.

The Brazilian was expected to have recovered by now, but it appears he is only back for individual training and not team training.

Kelleher will probably play against title rival Manchester City again on Sunday.

But Liverpool boss Arne Slot has already made it clear that “when Alisson is fit, he will be our number one goalkeeper”.

After the match against Real Madrid, Slot said: “Kelleher has been excellent. He has done a remarkable job for us”, before adding: “As has our other goalkeeper, who has also been remarkable.”

Kelleher has kept five clean sheets in 10 appearances for Liverpool this season, conceding just seven goals.

Former England defender Gary Cahill said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “The old saying is ‘if you have the opportunity, take it’ and Caoimhin Kelleher has certainly done that.

“Liverpool have a world-class goalkeeper in Alisson who is likely to return, but it is a big headache for the manager.”
