As temperatures and humidity continue to rise over the coming days, we should be concerned about the potential for extreme weather.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the chance of damaging wind gusts and large hail during the day and/or Tuesday evening currently ranges from 20 to 40 percent.

No tornadoes are expected. However, some areas could see locally heavy rainfall and cloud-to-ground lightning if these storms occur.

It’s the humidity and unstable weather patterns that are bringing us to the brink of extreme weather. The NWS team in Grand Rapids explained it this way in a social media forecast post today:

“We have a 20-40 percent chance of storms in our forecast for Tuesday and Tuesday night across central-southern Lower Michigan, plus a threat of severe weather,” NWS meteorologists said. “With this warm and humid air, it’s like sitting on a powder keg waiting for a spark to come along. I’m not sure when or if. Be aware, but don’t cancel any plans.”

How hot and humid will it be early this week? Monday and Tuesday will be hot-seat days, with temperatures approaching 90 on Monday and exceeding 90 on Tuesday. The continued humidity will push the heat index to around 100, according to the NWS.

Temperatures are expected to cool down slightly on Wednesday.
