Chappell Roan Wears Medieval Chainmail Gown to 2024 MTV VMAs

Before winning Best New Artist at tonight’s MTV VMAs, Chappell Roan changed into another ensemble, this time opting for a sheer, chained armor set by Rabanne. It was the star’s third look of the night, following her Y/Project red carpet ensemble and Joan of Arc performance drag.

The look continues her medieval theme for the ceremony, and hints at themes of protection and defense in her performances. (Which also ties into her recent comments about privacy and fame.) Known for her early Lady Gaga-esque looks, the young singer appeared as the Statue of Liberty at Governor’s Ball in New York this summer and dressed as a nun at the Hinterland Music Festival in St. Charles, Iowa. Her wardrobe is a highly celebrated part of her image, and she has credited drag as a major inspiration for her aesthetic. In her acceptance speech for winning Best New Artist, Roan said, “I dedicate this to all the drag artists who inspire me, who inspire me, and I dedicate this to queer and trans people who are fueling pop music.”

Many drag artists were also present at the awards show. Sasha Colby, winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 introduced Roan before she took the stage. Season 16 third place finisher Plane Jane wore a Roan-inspired look.

Roan has been on a meteoric rise in recent months. Her latest single, “Good Luck, Babe!” is currently sitting high on the Billboard Hot 100, and she’s been drawing record-breaking crowds at her recent concerts. Her award tonight cements her rocket to pop stardom.
