Chargers-Cardinals drew 1.8 million spectators

The staggered doubleheader with one game on broadcast and cable and the other on the ESPN+ service, unsurprisingly, resulted in less than stellar ratings for the game that was streamed, between the Chargers and the Cardinals.

ESPN didn’t mention it the audience figures in the press release for the Monday evening games of week 7, and with good reason. The game attracted 1.8 million viewers, according to a source with knowledge of the data.

And that includes those watching on terrestrial channels in the local markets of Phoenix and Los Angeles.

Nowadays, 1.8 million is not a bad number for a sporting event. It’s a terrible number for an NFL game. And that’s why ESPN didn’t report the Chargers-Cardinals ratings.

Hopefully the number was low enough to convince ESPN not to do another staggered doubleheader with any of the games on ESPN+. And if they want to get rid of the staggered doubleheaders on Monday nights altogether, I won’t complain.
