Chargers-Cardinals Live Game Recap: Justin Herbert, Bolts ready for first primetime game

The Chargers (3-2) and Cardinals (2-4) are set to kick off the second part of Monday night’s doubleheader in primetime.

Los Angeles will start without Quentin Johnston and return man Derius Davis. Defensively, pass rusher Joey Bosa will miss yet another game due to his nagging hip injury. Still, this is a game the Chargers hope to win to maintain second place in the AFC West behind the undefeated Chiefs. Back-to-back wins on the road would do wonders for their momentum right before they return home to host the Saints (2-5).

The Cardinals, on the other hand, are highlighted by dual-threat quarterback Kyler Murray, who now has elite rookie wideout Marvin Harrison Jr. has to throw to if he doesn’t turn it over to returning James Connor. Defensively, they are near the bottom of the league, which is a refreshing change of pace for the Chargers who have played their last three games against the Chiefs, Steelers and Broncos, all of whom employ top units.

First quarter

The Chargers won the toss and elected to postpone. The defense was the first to be on edge.

On the opening drive, Khalil Mack got the upset going early when he got his hands on several passes from Kyler Murray. He hit the second right into the arms of defensive tackle Teair Tart, who started to return the interception, but Arizona running back James Connor punched it out before the Cardinals jumped back in to get the ball back.

Luckily, the Chargers forced a three-and-out from there thanks to Khalil Mack’s immediate pressure on third down, forcing Murray to throw out.

The Chargers started off steady taking small pieces from the field with some strong runs from JK Dobbins and some easy pitch-and-catch passes to tight end Will Dissly. Around the midfield logo, Herbert feigned a handoff before launching a pass down the left sideline to a wide-open Jalen Reagor. The newly appointed Bolt took two steps before a Cardinals defender knocked the ball out of his hands before bouncing into the arms of another Cardinal.

Although they have had just one offensive possession, the Chargers have already lost two fumbles.
