Chargers’ Josh Palmer, Raiders’ Jack Jones ejected after fight

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Officials ejected Chargers receiver Joshua Palmer and Raiders cornerback Jack Jones in the fourth quarter of the Chargers’ 22-12 win on Sunday after a brawl involving multiple players.

The battle began after Raiders RB Gus Edwards stopped a two-point conversion with 3:40 seconds left in the quarter.

Palmer ran to help WR Ladd McConkey block safety Marcus Epps. Jones ran after Palmer and the two were wrapped up outside the end zone. Several players tried to break up the fight, which led to separate scuffles.

Jones was unavailable for comment after the match. Palmer said he “took a lot of punches,” including one earlier in the match by Jones, and was surprised he was ejected for not throwing a punch.

“They came and started hitting, but we’re not going to be punching bags,” Palmer said. “So we had to defend ourselves.”

Palmer said there is “no bad blood” between him and Jones or the Raiders, but felt the Raiders were frustrated by the aggressive blocking style of the Chargers receivers.

“It’s nothing personal. There’s no bad blood,” Palmer said. “UFC guys beat each other up for a living, and then they go back and shake hands. Especially in football, that’s not like that at all. But it’s not personal at all. We’re just doing our job as hard as we can. We’re not trying to hurt anybody.”

Chargers WR Quentin Johnston was one of the first players to try to break up Palmer and Jones, but Raiders OLB Maxx Crosby grabbed Johnston by the collar and pulled him down, starting another fight. Eventually, Chargers coaches, including Jim Harbaugh and linebackers coach NaVorro Bowman, stepped onto the field to help break up the melee. Bowman waved his hands to encourage the crowd afterward.

“I was just there for my teammates,” Johnston said. “(Crosby) was there for his teammates, and it worked out the way it worked out.”

Harbaugh described the fight as a “melee.”

“I’m just trying to get our guys back, separate them, get the rest of the guys to come,” Harbaugh said. “I was just trying to break it up.” Harbaugh said the team did not discuss the fight after the game.

Raiders coach Antonio Pierce called the fight “inexcusable” and “undisciplined.”

“It’s just not worth it,” Pierce said. “They scored, I mean, they kicked our asses. They scored. Let it go.”
