Chargers players say they knew they would win despite the Bengals’ comeback

The Los Angeles Chargers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in dramatic fashion on Sunday evening. A 29-yard go-ahead pass from JK Dobbins put the Chargers back in the driver’s seat with just 18 seconds left. A deflection from Derwin James on a Hail Mary attempt from Joe Burrow to Tee Higgins as time expired sealed the Chargers’ seventh win of the season.

It wasn’t without drama, however, as the Chargers were up by 21 points in the third quarter. The Bengals stormed back with three consecutive touchdown drives and could have taken the lead had Evan McPherson not missed two field goals.

Despite the comeback attempt, the Chargers’ sideline was unphased, according to Dobbins.

“We were calm,” Dobbins said, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. “We knew we were going to win the game. No one backed down, no one was hijacked. Everyone knew it. We had a job to do and we did it.”

For a team in its first year under a new head coach, this is a good sign for things to come in the future. The Chargers are currently playing complementary football with a clear path to the playoffs.
