Charli XCX Clarifies What ‘Brat’ Is in ‘SNL’ Opening Monologue

Charli XCX is here to finally clear up what “snot” or wet is.

In her tight opening monologue with her inaugural hosting stint Saturday evening live (doing double duty as musical guest, no less), she labeled Martha Stewart’s recent feud with a journalist as a decidedly messed up affair.

“You may know me from my album Bratbut don’t worry if you don’t. There is Nothing There’s something wrong with being straight,” she began in the intro, joking about her niche popularity among the queer community.

So, what exactly is brat?

“Honestly, it’s like an attitude,” the Grammy nominee said. “It’s an atmosphere. For example, Martha Stewart’s new documentary: When Martha gets angry about an old magazine article and says she’s glad the journalist who wrote it is dead, That is a brat. And then on Friday, when that exact journalist responded and said, “Hey, I’m still alive, bitch,” i.e. extremely brat.”

Unfortunately, though SNL alum Kyle Mooney fails the “anyone can be a brat” test after a brief surprise appearance.

“Brat is all about being vulnerable, so this is truly a dream come true,” Charli XCX said, poking fun at her “party girl” persona. “I’m so excited to be here, and I’m not used to being out so early on a Saturday night, but for you guys it’s worth it.”

Elsewhere during the monologue, she seemingly hit back at those who might criticize her for her use of autotune: “Speaking of singing, I want to take a moment to thank someone who has been there for me throughout my career: autotune. Autotune makes everything sounds better, even really bad news – like this – look: I’m breaking up with you because I’m trying to connect with your dad.
