Chelsea 6-2 Wolves (25 Aug 2024) Match Analysis

Noni Madueke scored a second-half hat-trick as Chelsea beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 6-2 in a frantic Premier League clash at Molineux on Sunday.

Chelsea’s first Premier League points of the season and the first for new manager Enzo Maresca came in spectacular fashion as the visitors tore Wolves apart after the break following a gripping first half.

Maresca’s team led twice in the first half with goals from Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer, but on both occasions Wolves deservedly scored back through Matheus Cunha and Jorgen Strand Larsen.

However, Wolves were losing after the break and Madueke took control of the game with three goals in 15 minutes, all assisted by the excellent Palmer.

João Félix came off the bench and marked his return to the club with his team’s sixth goal.

Much has been made of Chelsea’s large squad and the puzzle that Italian Maresca must solve, but the youthful team he selected on Sunday came together impressively well.

Madueke was the villain in more ways than one for the home fans, with the England forward being booed from the start after a deleted social media post in which he insulted Wolverhampton.

However, he silenced the shouters in convincing fashion, allowing Chelsea to get back into the league action after being beaten by champions Manchester City on the opening weekend.

The 22-year-old player restored Chelsea’s lead in the 49th minute with a shot that found Rayan Aït-Nouri.

That goal ended the fight for Wolves, who had arguably been the better team in the first half. Once again it was Palmer who sent Madueke clear and fired the shot between the legs of Wolves keeper José Sá.

Madueke made it 5-2 with an almost identical goal, which saw Wolves give the ball away and Cole send it clear to complete his hat-trick.

With Wolves in trouble, Pedro Neto, who left the team for Chelsea in the summer, ensured Felix would get a cool finish.
