Butker, 29, was rewarded with a major contract extension in August, and he has backed it up with another strong season so far, making 18 of 20 field goals and 21 of his 22 extra point attempts. Replacing him, even for a short period, will be a tall order. The Chiefs have won seven of their nine games by one score this season.

The 25-year-old Shrader was one of the few bright spots for the Jets on Sunday. He made both his field goal attempts and all of his points in a 31-6 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He has played in just two NFL games in his career, making all three extra-point attempts for the Colts in their Week 1 loss to the Texans. The Jets signed Shrader to their practice squad later in October.

The Chiefs’ first game without Butker is Sunday at the Buffalo Bills.
