The NFL world was shocked by two blockbuster trades on Tuesday. First, the New York Jets, unsurprisingly, traded for Davante Adams, then the Buffalo Bills acquired Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns. While their rivals increasingly focus on top talent, the Chiefs remain steadfast despite their obvious need for a wide receiver.

Luckily for them, the Amari Cooper trade has a huge silver lining. To make room for the five-time Pro Bowler, the Buffalo Bills released Marquez Valdes-Scantling, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. This gives the Chiefs an excellent opportunity to bring back a playmaker who knows the system.

When asked about the type of wide receiver Kansas City would consider trading for, head coach Andy Reid preferred someone who “has experience running the offense.”

Valdes-Scantling certainly fits that bill. After signing a three-year, $30 million deal with the Chiefs in the 2022 offseason, MVS spent two seasons and won two Super Bowls in Kansas City. At times he was extremely frustrating to watch and didn’t live up to general expectations.

At the same time, Chiefs fans can’t forget his contributions this past postseason. In the AFC Championship game against the Ravens, he caught the game-clinching 32-yard pass late in the fourth quarter. He followed that up with a touchdown against the 49ers in the Super Bowl before being released in the offseason and ending up in Buffalo.

Through six games so far, MVS has played a career-low 39% of snaps. He was targeted just nine times and hauled in two catches for 26 yards. For the Chiefs offense, which is in desperate need of more depth and playmaking, the 30-year-old receiver could still make an impact.
