Fischer went for the first mammogram in October 2023, but the results were inconclusive. The actress’s doctor advised her to have a breast ultrasound, which revealed a spot on her left breast. After a biopsy, Fischer was diagnosed with breast cancer on December 1, 2023.

“Triple-positive breast cancer is an aggressive form of breast cancer, but it also responds very well to treatment,” Fischer wrote. “In January, I had a lumpectomy to remove the tumor. Fortunately, my cancer was caught early and had not spread to my lymph nodes or throughout the rest of my body, but due to the aggressive nature of triple positive cancer, there was still needed chemotherapy and radiation to make sure it didn’t return.”

She added: “It takes a village to fight cancer, and I have had a wonderful village. Until this happened, I don’t think I really knew the generosity and kindness that could rain down from one person to another. It started with a team of doctors and nurses. All angels.”

After hearing the news, Fischer sat her children down and was “very honest with them.”

“They are 10 and 13, and they were going to live in the house while I was going through this,” she told the “TODAY” show. “They’ll see. And the most important thing I wanted them to know was that the way I looked sick during this process was side effects of treatments. It wasn’t cancer that made me sick.”

“I think that distinction really put them at ease,” she added. “And then we just did it together. And they were great.”
