City enforcement ensures safety by removing potential fire threats in south Reno

A potential fire hazard in south Reno is now gone thanks to the City of Reno’s code enforcement.

News 4-Fox 11 reported in September that residents living next to a lot in south Reno were concerned about an overgrown lot full of weeds and yard debris. It was so thick you couldn’t see the buildings on the land. Residents said there was a fire risk. During the Davis Fire burning in Washoe Valley, residents say embers the size of houses landed on that property. The neighbors were afraid that the land would catch fire.

The property is located on Old Virginia Road, near Damonte Ranch Parkway.

The City of Reno Code Enforcement has issued a notice to property owners that weeds and vegetation must be cut down by October 17th. The city extended that deadline once to Nov. 4, which the owners adhered to. Residents are happy.

“I think they’re doing a good job on this field. What they’ve done is very, very good, but this here, along the fence and there’s a few piles that need to be picked up and then I’d say we’d be done ” said neighbor Gary Melancon.

The owners previously said they were in their 70s and were struggling financially and physically to remove the weeds and did not believe it was a fire hazard.

In addition to requiring the owners to remove their overgrown shrubs, the City of Reno Public Works team also removed overgrowth of weeds in the adjacent right-of-way.
