A source said: “There has been talk of a Goonies reboot for a long time, but the green light has finally been given to go ahead.

“The plan is to start developing ideas for the sequel next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027.

“The original is so culturally important that Warner Bros. knows they have to get it absolutely right.

“It’s likely that big stars will return, but the possibilities for the future of the sequel are endless.

“The team that is going to start the project is so excited.

“It’s still early days, but the youth adventure market is growing, so they want to capitalize on that.

“The Goonies is now 39 years old and the idea that they can bring the magic of the film to a whole new audience is something that really excites the team.”

The 1985 original was based on a story by Steven Spielberg and followed the treasure-hunting adventures of a group of kids from Goon Docks in Astoria, Oregon.

Their motto was: “Goonies never give up.”

The film stars Sean Astin and Corey Feldman, both 53, as Mikey and Mouth, and Josh Brolin, 56, as Mikey’s older brother Brand.
