CNN host surprised by Harris’ 2019 policy positions, such as decriminalization of drugs and funding for gender reassignment surgery for immigrants

CNN host Erin Burnett was surprised by the far-left policy positions Vice President Kamala Harris adopted when she was a presidential candidate in 2019.

Burnett spoke with CNN senior Andrew Kaczynski on the network Monday night about a recently discovered ACLU candidate questionnaire Harris filled out in 2019 that showed her support for several far-left policies. According to the reporter, Harris promised on the form that she would end the detention of illegal immigrants at the border and even look for ways to provide taxpayer dollars to migrants seeking medical gender reassignment procedures.

“Taxpayer-funded gender reassignment surgeries for detained immigrants? Did she really say she supported that?” Burnett asked, her tone suggesting she was having trouble accepting the idea.

CNN anchor Erin Burnett nearly had to do a double take when she learned that then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris supported taxpayer funding for gender reassignment surgeries for immigrants in 2019.

Kaczynzski, whose team recently discovered and reported on the 2019 questionnaire, told Burnett it was “an interesting snapshot” of the 2019 Democratic presidential primary, when Harris “was trying to be more to the left of Bernie Sanders, she was trying to be more to the left of Elizabeth Warren.”

The reporter focused on the immigration portion of the questionnaire, telling Burnett that the then-presidential candidate had indicated she wanted to defund ICE and push for gender-sensitive operations for illegal immigrants.

After Burnett expressed surprise that Harris supported using taxpayer dollars to fund gender reassignment surgery for immigrants, Kaczynski responded, “She confirmed that in writing when asked. She also said she supported it for federal prisoners.”

The reporter went on to detail Harris’ far-left promises on the immigration front. “Now she’s also promised to cut immigration detention by 50%, close all family and private facilities, and cut funding for ICE, and then end ICE detentions with local law enforcement.”

Burnett was incredulous at these policy positions, saying, “I mean, these are things that you know it’s hard to imagine that you would use taxpayer dollars to fund the gender transition of migrants in custody, and yet, as you say, in writing and verbally.”

These left-wing positions are a far cry from the way 2024 presidential candidate Harris has promised to secure the southern border if she reaches the White House. Harris’ campaign said last month that she will “ensure sufficient resources to enforce our laws and prioritize detention” for those who threaten public safety and national security at the border.

Burnett and Kaczynski last week criticized the Harris administration for using images of the US border wall built during the Trump administration in a recent campaign ad, despite the fact that she had labeled the wall “useless” for years.

The reporter noted, “That’s a section of the wall that was actually built by Donald Trump. It was built in an area where there was no wall, it was actually quite controversial when they built it back then.”

Burnett asked, “She’s using the wall he built to say, ‘Look what I did’?”

During their interview Monday, Burnett and Kaczynski went on to discuss Harris’s statement on the questionnaire that she would support the federal government decriminalizing all illegal drug possession.

“It would mean that the federal government would regulate all drug possession, not just marijuana, which is what she referred to in her answer to this question, but it would also mean… fentanyl, crack, you know, cocaine. Things like that.”

When asked for comment, the Harris campaign referred Fox News Digital to a statement campaign communications director Michael Tyler made on Fox News Channel Tuesday morning.

During the segment, he said, “Yeah, again, I mean, that questionnaire — that’s not what she’s proposing. It’s not what she’s running on. Do you want to talk about immigration or border security? She’s been very clear about what she — how she’s governed and how she plans to govern when she’s president of the United States. You talk about border security, for example, she’s made it very clear that the bipartisan border security package that Donald Trump blew up because he thought it would benefit him politically — if it comes to her desk, she will sign it and make it law.”
