College Football Playoff: What the 12-team bracket looks like after the second Top 25 rankings revealed

Week 11 was the first after the College Football Playoff Top 25 rankings came out. A wild series of games led to an upset, and the twelve-team bracket saw a major shift as a result.

Two of the top four teams in the initial rankings lost last week. No. 3 Georgia stood out Ole ma’am at Oxford and No. 4 Miami lost from Georgia Tech in Atlanta. They both came in as projected conference champions in the first twelve-team bracket, but only one stayed there as Week 12 approached.

Another top four seed nearly lost in Week 11 as Saturday turned into Sunday. BYU played its annual rivalry game against Utahbut provided a final drive for the ages to remain undefeated and squarely in the mix for a Big 12 championship, as well as a first-round bye.

Based on the second College Football Playoff rankings, the highest-ranked team in each league will be the projected conference champion. In the new series, first-round matches will take place at campus locations and the four highest-ranked teams will receive byes. The quarterfinals and semifinals will take place at bowl sites, and this year’s national championship will take place on Jan. 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The College Football Playoff bracket will certainly continue to change in November leading up to the announcement of the final rankings on December 8. This is where things stand after the second Top 25 announcement of the season. (Projected conference champions indicated by asterisks.)

Goodbye to the first round

No. 1 seed – Oregon*

Another double-digit win in Big Ten play Oregon not only at the top of the College Football Playoff rankings, but also as No. 1 in the 12-team bracket. The Ducks cruised to a 39-18 victory Maryland improving to 10-0 on the season last week.

Dillon Gabriel remains impressive as he leads the offense and throws three touchdowns as he looks to remain in the Heisman Trophy discussion. Oregon now prepares for a primetime matchup against Wisconsin in his penultimate game of the season.

No. 2 seed – Texas*

Georgia’s loss to Ole Miss made it possible Texas to enter as the No. 2 seed and projected SEC champions despite losing the head-to-head matchup with the Bulldogs. The Longhorns left no doubt about it last week Floridawhich flew past the Gators 49-17 behind a huge day Quinn Ewers.

Fueled by a year-long first half, Ewers threw for 333 yards and set a new career high with five touchdowns as Texas emerged from the bye. The Longhorns are still very active in the SEC, coming in as the highest-ranked team in the league as the projected champions and No. 2 seed in the CFP bracket.

No. 3 seed – BYU*

It seemed like it BYU was on his way to his first loss of the year in the “Holy warrivalry against Utah. The Cougars were on their final drive, but a controversial penalty kept the game going and ultimately allowed them to score Will Ferrin to drill the game-winning field goal.

Due to the shakeup in the rankings, BYU moved up to third in the projected 12-team College Football Playoff bracket. The Cougars remain the only undefeated team in the Big 12 with three games remaining, and they have a conference title berth in their sights.

No. 4 seed – Miami*

After we entered the first ranking as number 4 team a week ago, Miami stumbled for the first time this season. The hurricanes fell Georgia Tech 28-23 for their first loss of the season, dropping them to fourth place in the projected 12-team College Football Playoff bracket.

Miami is now connected to Clemson for second place in the ACC behind SMUbut as the higher-ranked team in the league, the ‘Canes are the projected conference champions in the second CFP bracket. There are two more matches scheduled Cam Ward and Co. want to stay in the mix for the national title.

First Round Matchups (Campus Sites)

No. 12 seed Boise State at No. 5 seed Ohio State

Once again the highest ranked team from Group 5, Boise State continues to push its way into the College Football Playoff after last week’s win Nevada. Ashton Jeanty put together his fourth 200 rushing yard game of the year, totaling 209 yards and three touchdowns to take the lead.

Coming off a big win Penn State, State of Ohio didn’t miss a second as Purdue came to Columbus. The Buckeyes left no doubt en route to a resounding 45-0 victory over the Boilermakers, but OSU still finds itself as an overall team because Oregon is the higher-ranked Big Ten team.

No. 9 seed Notre Dame at No. 8 seed Tennessee

From his last farewell week, Notre Dame to pit a dominant performance against each other State of Florida en route to a 52-3 victory in South Bend. That gave the Fighting Irish seven straight wins, who continue to rise in the rankings and salvage their College Football Playoff hopes after an early loss to Northern Illinois.

Tennessee comes from a resounding victory The state of Mississippi this week, coming in as the No. 8 seed in the field. However, the Vols face a big question Nico Iamaleava status for a crucial game in week 12 against Georgia.

No. 10 seed Alabama at No. 7 seed Indiana

Last week’s match against LSU was essentially an ‘elimination game’, and Alabama earned the crucial victory to stay in contention for the College Football Playoff. The Crimson Tide – led by an impressive night out Jalen Milroe – now have a path to the 12-team field with three games remaining, starting with a non-conference matchup with Mercer this week.

For the first time in program history Indiana is 10-0 and right in the middle of the College Football Playoff picture. The Hoosiers got a win Michigan at Memorial Stadium in Week 11 as they head into the farewell game for a crucial game against State of Ohiowho will play a key role in determining their fate for the CFP.

No. 11 seed Ole Miss at No. 6 seed Penn State

Ole ma’am fell just outside the College Football Playoff bracket a week ago, but one win over Georgia propelled the rebels to the planned first round. They climbed to No. 11 this week as they entered the bye match for the final two games of the year.

A White Out game that created quite an atmosphere Penn State returned home for a primetime game against Washington. The Nittany Lions bounced back well after a Week 10 loss and earned the 35-6 victory to stay in the mix for the College Football Playoff.
