Cougars crush No. 13 Kansas State 38-9 – Deseret News

The Deseret News has live coverage of Saturday’s game between BYU and Kansas State. Check back for updates throughout the game.

Final score

BYU 38, Kansas State 9

For BYU fans, it won’t be hard to remember the September 21st night.

The Cougars defeated No. 13 Kansas State 38-9 on Saturday night in Provo to start 2024 4-0 and earn their first Big 12 victory of the young season.

BYU excelled in every phase of the game, scoring touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams in the same game for the first time since 1996.

Additionally, Jay Hill’s defense failed to allow a touchdown in the game for the second time this season.

Fourth quarter

BYU 38, Kansas State 9

12:02 —BYU takes it up a notch.

Sione Moa rushed forward, broke through several Kansas State tacklers and reached the end zone with a 21-yard touchdown run — his first career score. BYU 38, Kansas State 9.

Third quarter

BYU 31, Kansas State 9

5:12 — After 31 straight points from BYU, Kansas State scored again.

The Wildcats again failed to reach the end zone, but did manage to score their third field goal of the night, moving them within 22 points. BYU 31, Kansas State 9.

10:45 —These Cougars are unstoppable.

Even when Parker Kingston initially seemed to have trouble absorbing a Kansas State punt, he still managed to find the ball – and then some – en route to a touchdown on a 90-yard return that might just bury the Wildcats for good. BYU 31, Kansas State 6.

Kingston’s punt heroics — which came just a week after Keelan Marion returned a second-half kickoff for his own touchdown — are BYU’s first since 2013 and tied for the third-longest return in school history.

13:01 —The defeat can begin.

On the second play after Taggart’s interception, Jake Retzlaff fired a slant to Darius Lassiter for a 3-yard touchdown. BYU 24, Kansas State 6.

Lassiter scored immediately on a 24-yard run from Sione Moa, bringing the Cougars to the goal line.

13:54 — BYU’s defense just can’t help but make plays.

The Cougars made their third straight catch on an interception by Harrison Taggart just a minute into the half. BYU 17, Kansas State 6.

The interception was Taggart’s first of his college career and gave BYU the ball back at the Kansas State 27-yard line.

Avery Johnson, who had thrown just one interception in his career before tonight, has now thrown two against the Cougars.

Rest

BYU 17, Kansas State 6

What a wild way to end the half.

With less than two minutes left and trailing 6-3, BYU’s defense managed a scoop-and-score to take the lead. They then recovered the ball with an interception in Kansas State territory. Finally, they scored a 23-yard touchdown to Chase Roberts to make it a two-possession game.

To say the LaVell Edwards Stadium whiteout crowd was hysterical would be an understatement. Late night kickoffs in Provo are often crazy, but never this.

The Wildcats have already racked up 124 rushing yards but have yet to record a single end zone trip and two turnovers.

Jake Retzlaff finished the half 11-of-16 passing for 125 yards and a touchdown to go with a 155.0 rating. Though the Cougars have just 10 yards on the ground so far, Retzlaff has already connected with seven different receivers, including Roberts twice for a team-high 47 yards.

Kansas State kicks off the second half as BYU’s defense looks to continue its recent success.

Second quarter

BYU 17, Kansas State 6

0:29 — Now it’s the BYU offense’s turn to play the hero.

Jake Retzlaff took advantage of his excellent field position after Batty’s interception to connect for a 23-yard touchdown with Chase Roberts, further increasing the Cougars’ lead. BYU 17, Kansas State 6.

0:57 — BYU’s defense strikes again.

Immediately following Prassas’ touchdown, which recovered the fumble, Wildcats QB Avery Johnson attempted to throw the ball away, but Cougars defensive end Tyler Batty was able to throw an unexpected interception. BYU 10, Kansas State 6.

1:08 — BYU’s biggest defensive play of the year couldn’t have come at a better time.

On a crucial third down just before halftime, Jack Kelly forced a fumble that was picked up by freshman safety Tommy Prassas and returned for a touchdown, giving the Cougars their first lead of the game. BYU 10, Kansas State 6.

2:10 — Will Ferrin puts the Cougars on the scoreboard with a 31-yard field goal. Kansas State 6, BYU 3.

BYU had advanced the ball all the way to Kansas State’s 13-yard line, but Jake Retzlaff lost 12 yards on a sack and the promising drive was derailed.

Though the sack didn’t come at the right time, Retzlaff still completed 10-of-15 passes on the night for 102 yards and a 123.8 rating. He also made two impressive throws to Chase Roberts and Darius Lassiter prior to the field goal.

09:07 — The Wildcats extend their lead with another field goal. Kansas State 6, BYU 0.

Kansas State once again leaned heavily on its run game, and carried the drive to 16 plays and 87 yards in a span of more than eight minutes. However, the Cougars were able to get a late stop on the possession to force a field goal try and keep their offense in contention.

The Wildcats have now burned 13:41 off the clock and run for 117 yards as BYU looks for its first score of the game.

First quarter

Kansas State 3, BYU 0

8:02 — Kansas State strikes first.

The Wildcats capped a 12-play, 53-yard drive with a Chris Tennant field goal from 32 yards out to open the night’s scoring. Kansas State 3, BYU 0.

BYU’s defense struggled to stop the run initially, but managed to avoid giving up more than three points late in the drive.
