Could the Colts trade QB Anthony Richardson?

INDIANAPOLIS – The Colts currently have no plans to trade Anthony Richardson after benching him for Joe Flacco this week, a team source told IndyStar.

The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday at 4:00 PM ET.

Naturally, some around the league will inquire about the No. 4 pick in the 2023 draft, who was benched last Tuesday after just 10 career starts.

The decision comes amid an organization-wide commitment to allow Richardson to learn the job and build his accuracy on the field, and coach Shane Steichen is presenting this as a seasonal change as of now.

Richardson seemed blindsided by the news and was initially unclear about what was changing.

“I’m using this moment as an opportunity to grow and just learn from my mistakes,” Richardson said.

Going back to his pre-draft meetings with the Colts, Richardson was under the impression he would learn through game repetitions.

If that is still his mentality, or if he has lost confidence in the plan about him, it is always possible that he can request a trade, but the news remains fresh.

Based on historical precedent, if the Colts were to consider trading Richardson, they could look to the deal the 49ers made with Trey Lance, where they received a fourth-round pick from the Cowboys. That move came in Lance’s third season, after Brock Purdy took charge of the starting quarterback job for the short and long term.

The Colts aren’t in a similar spot as the benching happened just a week ago and they could re-sign Richardson at some point. Flacco is 17, after alle season.

“I still believe he is the future of this team,” captain and linebacker Zaire Franklin said. “I know this sounds crazy to everyone right now, but I still believe he is the future of the Indianapolis Colts.”

Teams will likely make the call this week anyway, as Richardson’s theoretical trade value is at its lowest and there is always a short- and long-term need for quarterbacks in the NFL.

The Giants have been in need of Daniel Jones’ issues since signing a long-term extension. Brian Daboll earned the job by developing Josh Allen from a player who completed 52% of his passes as a rookie to the second MVP in his third season. From a purely athletic and accuracy standpoint, Allen has been used as a comparison for Richardson’s potential ceiling.

The Seahawks were very interested in appointing Richardson as Geno Smith’s eventual heir, a source close to Richardson told IndyStar.

The Panthers benched Bryce Young before bringing back the No. 1 overall pick as an injury replacement for Andy Dalton. Carolina selected Young ahead of Richardson in the 2023 draft, but now has a different general manager and coach.

The Raiders have already made a number of quarterback changes this season and are back with Gardner Minshew, who was Richardson’s teammate in Indianapolis last season.
