Cris Collinsworth appeared to forget the NFL’s overtime rules during the Rams-Lions game

The Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams faced off on Sunday Night Football in the first overtime of the 2024 NFL season.

Cris Collinsworth and Mike Tirico were in the booth for NBC, but Collinsworth seemed to have a memory lapse during the overtime. As the Lions marched onto the field, leaning heavily on their running back tandem of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, Collinsworth began suggesting that Detroit attempt a field goal to secure the victory.

Collinsworth seemed to act under the impression that the NFL had sudden-death overtime rules, and spoke as if the Lions wanted to win the game with a field goal. In reality, the game wouldn’t be over until Detroit scored a touchdown. If they kicked a field goal, the Rams would have a chance to possess the ball and respond.

“You start thinking about it, right? You start thinking about how much you need before you line up and kick? You start thinking about what side you want your kicker to kick from?” Collinsworth said as the Lions marched onto the field.

“Try to score, but don’t let the Rams even touch the ball,” Tirico replied, apparently trying to remind Collinsworth of the rules.

The minor gaffe did not go unnoticed by NFL fans, who quickly wondered whether Collinsworth was aware of the league’s overtime rules.
