Cynthia Erivo Calls Fan-Edited ‘Wicked’ Poster ‘Wildest, Most Offensive Thing’

Cynthia Erivo called out a fan-edited “Wicked” poster circulating online, describing it as “offensive” and “very hurtful.”

An official poster for the upcoming film, which hits theaters in November, was released earlier this month by distributor Universal Pictures. (NBC News and Universal are both part of Comcast.)

The image shows Ariana Grande’s character, Glinda, whispering to Erivo’s Elphaba. The film’s poster differs from the Broadway version as it shows Elphaba’s eyes lifting her hat and her lipstick color changing from red to green. Amid the buzz about the musical, many online started pointing out the changes. One person changed the poster to cover Elphaba’s eyes, prompting Erivo’s post.

“Our poster is a tribute and not an imitation. Editing my face and hiding my eyes is erasing me,” Erivo wrote in her Instagram story on Wednesday. “And that is just very painful.”

The edited poster did not include any changes to Glinda’s outfit or hair.

Erivo said that the original Broadway poster was an illustration not based on real actors, and that showing her face in the film version of the poster was a deliberate choice.

“I am a real human being who has chosen to look straight down the barrel of the camera at you, the viewer… because we communicate without words with our eyes,” she wrote.

She described the edited version of the poster as “the wildest, most offensive thing I’ve ever seen”, comparing it to two offensive AI-created memes related to the film that have also been widely shared online. One image shows Grande and Erivo hitting each other as their characters. Another shows Grande’s character asking Erivo if the color of her genitals matches the color of her green skin.

In a second Instagram story, Erivo posted the unedited version of the movie poster, writing, “Let me post this here, to remind you and cleanse your palette.”

“Wicked,” directed by Jon M. Chu, hits theaters on November 22. Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum and Bowen Yang star alongside Erivo and Grande.
