Dan Campbell announces that Aidan Hutchinson has broken his tibia

Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson needed immediate surgery for a fractured tibia, coach Dan Campbell said.

The team’s PR corrected Campbell and said it was not a compound fracture.

Hutchinson, the betting favorite for defensive player of the year, suffered a gruesome injury to his left leg with 11:43 left in the third quarter. He immediately knew the severity after a six-yard sack of Dak Prescott.

Medical personnel worked on Hutchinson for a long time, eventually placing his left leg in a cast before loading him onto a cart. The cart immediately drove to the tunnel where the ambulance is located, instead of to the X-ray room, and headed to a local trauma hospital.

β€œI hate it for Hutch. That’s hard,” Campbell said. β€œIt was tough. He is now in good hands. He is taken care of. He’s going to be here, and obviously he’s going to be out for a while, so that’s hard, and it’s hard when you lose someone like him. We will know much more after this and we of course wish him the best.”

Hutchinson’s injury was so bad that Fox did not show a recurrence of the injury.

Hutchinson made three tackles, a sack and three quarterback hits before leaving, and he has 7.5 sacks on the season.

The Lions defeated the Cowboys 47-9.
