D’Angelo Russell thinks D’Angelo Russell has impressed this preseason

If you’re a fan of wild D’Angelo Russell quotes, another one was just added to his greatest hits.

During Thursday’s Lakers shootaround, Russell was asked who has impressed him during training camp.

His response? Him of course.

Only Russell can say something that makes you cringe and chuckle at the same time.

He could have given a home run answer to a softball question by cheering up Lakers rookie Dalton Knecht or patted Lakers coach JJ Redick on the back while slamming Darvin Ham again.

Russell could have even given the LeBron answer in Year 22 and we would have eaten it up like ice cream on a summer day.

Instead, he says, the energy in the room died away.

What’s also great about this response from Russell is that it has been far from great.

While Redick might have said he had a career year this season, that certainly wasn’t the case on the floor during the preseason.

Russell was gritty, averaging 9.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. He also shot an abysmal 25% from three-point range, a far cry from his 41% average last season.

In that context, hearing him still joke might anger or frustrate fans, but I love it.

Let D-Lo be D-Lo; I mean, it’s not like you can stop him anyway.

Even on Media Day he came with the same snap and energy; as soon as he entered the room, he said, “Surprise, surprise,” a reference to how many people thought he would be gone for the summer.

Instead of parting ways with the Lakers, Russell, like your best friend’s partner you can’t stand, is here to stay.

Sign me up for another year of Russell, not like I have a choice.

The roller coaster he sends us on is fun and exciting.

Of course, like a ride at Six Flags, you have to wait a long time for a quick thrill, but when that moment comes, it feels like it was worth it.

There’s finally a new season and I don’t know if Russell will be a Laker at the end or how good or bad it will be, but I’m sure of one thing: it won’t be boring.
