Davis Fire reaches 31% containment as crews prepare for dangerous fire conditions

Firefighters made significant progress on the Davis Fire on Tuesday, reaching 31% containment by day’s end. But officials warned that rare and dangerous conditions forecast for Wednesday could undo some of that vital work.

The National Weather Service has issued a PDS, which stands for “particularly bad situation,” for Wednesday’s fire weather, according to Stewart Turner, fire behavior analyst.

“This is a very, very, very dangerous situation. The fire behavior is going to be some of the worst we’ve seen this year, and you’re in the middle of it,” Turner said at a community meeting Tuesday night.

This is largely due to the very high winds, which may prevent crews from operating the aircraft that officials say have been crucial in fighting the fire from above.

According to the fire brigade, under these circumstances it is possible that the fire could spread up to five kilometres on Wednesday, with possible local fires at a distance of half a kilometre to one kilometre from the fire.

Now more residents are preparing to evacuate in case the fire gets worse.

“We have most of our important stuff, documents, outside, but we’re always worried. We have our cats at my dad’s house and we’ve been at the Grand Sierra Resort for four days now,” said evacuated resident Megan Kiley.

“We are with my friends at the GSR and we look after the children and stuff while their parents are working in their hotel room because they still have to work. Then we go swimming with the children or try to relieve the stress,” said another member of the local community.

Firefighters are urging residents to follow all evacuation orders and warnings and stay away from the fire. A closure order will also be in effect starting Wednesday to prevent people from obstructing the work of firefighters.
